Black Honey Bees  (United States)
Modified By Prankster on 4/2/2009 9:27:59 AM)

I first thought they were just a few big black flies buzzing around my head.  Then I followed one to get a closer look.

Yup! It is a honey Bee!

I hope to collect the hive, and start using them on the tree farm.

Have you ever seen a black honey bee?  Are they really native to North America?  This is a first time for me.

Re: Black Honey Bees  (N/A)

Loki,

I'm glad you asked this question.  I had someone else ask me about black bees just the other day and I had no idea what they were talking about.  Apparently this berson like to do beelining to find feral hives and enjoyed finding these black bees.  I did a quick Google search and found this site that breiefly explains the various "races" of bees - http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Beekeeping/Honey_Bee_Races - see the section on the Western European Honey Bee.

I guess if you can find the hive, it's probably feral.  If it's surviving on its' own - you may a nice little find.  Try not to kill it by being helpful :)

Re: Black Honey Bees  (United States)

The Savoie honeybee has rather light wings for a black bee. Note ample hair on thorax and black abdomen with little hair.
The European dark bee can be distinguished from other subspecies by their stocky body, abundant thoracal and sparse abdominal hair which is brown, and overall dark coloration; in nigra, there is also heavy dark pigmentation of the wings. Overall, when viewed from a distance, they should appear blackish, or in mellifera, rich dark brown

Re: Black Honey Bees  (N/A)

I live in Central Florida, Today I saw a Honey bee that was all black. No stripes, black wings, black head, black body. I thought it strange because none of my bees are black.

The black bee was in my garden, not at my hive. Only one. I plan to keep looking for more, anyone with more information please feel free to contact me. Smauleyh@bellsouth.net
