Pierco inserts are made of plastic and then coated lightly in beeswax. The deep inserts are black and the medium and shallow inserts are white. Black is typically prefered for the deeps becasue it makes it easier to see eggs with the black background. White is typically preferred for honey supers because it allows you evaluate honey color better.
There is a lot of controversy about the pros and cons of using plastic foundation. Getting bees to pull foundation without wax can be tough. With a sufficient wax coating the bees have been know to pull out comb even in a nectar dearth. The inserts we sell are coated. I would highly recommend coating them with some additional wax by gently brushing on some melted wax with a sponge brush. I have used these in my Langstroth hives, and found them to be easy to work with.
Medium inserts can be used for shallow frames, but they will need to be cut down to size. We can do this for you at $0.03 per sheet.
